Gorilla 1st lesson - Takeaway-4/23

Gorillaswing

Well Gorillaswing I don't think you are cured yet but I know that you're not as far off as you think. You worked on setup and takeaway and will see that these adjustments in this early stage of your action have already created counter balancing changes in the backswing for the positive.

Stepping back, there are 5 stages to the golf swing: setup, takeaway, backswing, transition, and recoil. Setup is static and occurs prior to address, the setup creates the required angles for you to coil the body and club together away from the target on plane. The takeaway is summarized by its completion when the hands have reached belt high (when viewed from down the line). Backswing, transition, and recoil were not discussed but we can see the results of an improved setup and takeaway in the photos of your completed backswing.

Making changes to your golf swing is a life long pursuit not a sprint, the craving to rush ahead and change everything at once is universal but stay focused on what you’ve worked on before moving on to any other parts of your swing. Like any athletic movement the golf swing is a composite of moves and requires an accurate start to achieve your desired results, which are GIR not pretty swings.

Setup

A successful diagnosis by you  found the need to create more forward bend. In frame one of your first swings you are over doing it a bit causing your center of gravity to balance over your toes. Using the set up routine (bowing with eyes closed...) a better setup position was created. Hunter he has formed the ideal setup:

The setup in your last swing is OK, I think by this time of the practice session you were fatigued and gave back some knee flex. Remember to avoid measuring to the ball with your old method, in time the bowing routine will re-teach your minds-eye how far from the ball you need to begin your set up.

Takeaway

Look at the improvement here! The hands went from following the club head to directing it, more importantly the shoulders are driving the hands. Turning your shoulders a few degrees will move the hands to takeaway completion there is no need for the club head to pass your right nipple in this stage.

Of greatest note and future concentration is not allowing your hands to move closer to the ball during the takeaway. The yellow vertical line in the first two pics represents the position of your hands, observe how in the first sequence your hands have moved outside that line or closer to the ball this initiates your loop and from this move it’s almost impossible to recover. Moving the grip with your shoulder turn is the fix for this flaw; your homework for this issue is to turn your shoulders as far as you can without moving your hips (30-45*) while simultaneously elevating your left arm up and down. This is like learning to pat your head and rub your stomach at the same time, so do it slow and don’t get frustrated.

Results

Check out the last frame, your hands have moved back in front of your chest and can fire freely at the ball, eliminating the need to flip through impact. I would like to see your last frame as your third frame, look here at Luke's backswing position and how closely he resemble your last frame.
I will send you more info on why your fifth frame looks more like Big John and Phil than Luke and why you are better off copping Luke.... hint: right knee.

I have more to come but I want to hear your thoughts first….
